The animal connection
At Treetops Early Learning Centres, we strongly believe in the value of incorporating animals into our learning environment. This approach enhances children’s development by fostering confidence, compassion, respect, and knowledge. Animals provide unique opportunities for children to connect with nature, learn responsibility, and grow emotionally—all of which are key aspects of early childhood education (ECE).
How Animals Help Children Grow in ECE Settings
Here at Treetops Botany, we had a visitor called Bubbles the adorable Mini Lop bunny. Bubbles visited us for a couple of days and was a part of our learning environment. Through caring for him, children experience the joy of furry cuddles while learning about the diverse ways animals look, eat, move, sound, and feel.
Research highlights that interactions with animals can improve children’s social skills, reduce stress and anxiety, and enhance motivation and learning. At Treetops, we see these benefits firsthand as our children form bonds with Bubbles, gaining confidence and a sense of security in the process.
Learning Through Caring for Animals In A ECE Setting
Bubbles’ well-being is a top priority, and he is provided with fresh food and water daily. Children are actively encouraged to participate in his care under the guidance of our teachers, who model appropriate handling and hygiene practices. For example, children are taught to wash their hands before and after handling Bubbles or his equipment.
These activities are much more than simple routines—they are valuable learning opportunities. Caring for Bubbles helps children develop empathy, responsibility, and respect for life. It also allows them to observe how their actions impact others, nurturing their social and emotional growth.
Comfort and Connection
Animals like Bubbles bring comfort and security to our early childhood education (ECE) setting. For many children, he provides a trusted friend and a calming presence. Interacting with Bubbles stimulates their curiosity, encouraging them to explore new experiences while supporting their overall sense of well-being.
At Treetops Early Childhood Centres, we are proud to provide these enriching experiences as part of our holistic approach to early learning. If you’re looking for an ECE provider in Botany or Pukekohe that values hands-on learning and emotional development, we’d love to welcome you and your child to our Treetops family!
